April: Tsoureki

In Greece, there is a specially plaited bread at Easter: the Tsoureki. This is made of a very rich dough, with lots of sugar and fat.

The bread plaits are spiced with orange zest and vanilla. In addition, they contain hints of the spices mastic, a special tree gum, and mahleb, providing a unique, nutty smell and taste. Sometimes the bread is sprinkled with sesame or poppy.

Traditionally the bread plaits are already baked on the Thursday before Easter or on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday, the Greeks give the Tsoureki as a present, as a sign of friendship. The godparents in particular often bring it to their godchildren as a present.
