  | | | Sweet classics. August: Kulitsch | | Kulitsch is an Easter bread Tsar style. These sweet, rich yeast-raised baked goods with finely chopped almonds and sultanas soaked in brandy and almond liqueur have their origin in Russia. They are a symbol of the hill of Golgotha, where, according to the Gospels, Christ was crucified. Devout Russians already bake Kulitsch on Good Friday or Easter Saturday, so that they can be blessed by a priest before the night to Easter Sunday. They are cut early on Easter Sunday, after the mass of resurrection, at the end of which the rule of fasting is lifted. The Kulitsch get their attractive appearance from the decoration with lemon fondant and brightly coloured streusel or the brightly coloured inscription “XB” (Christ is Risen).
