January: Galette des Rois

The Galette des Rois (Three Kings’ Cake) is traditionally served in France on 6th January, Epiphany, to remember the Three Kings.

Basically two different types can be distinguished: As well as a version from puff pastry, there is also one from confectionery yeast dough. The latter is made of an especially high-quality brioche dough which is traditionally processed overnight.

A small china figurine is baked into the cake. Whoever finds this when eating his piece is honoured with a cardboard crown and is the king of the family for a day. The tradition of the Galette des Rois already originated in the Middle Ages, however, it is still very much alive in France today and, in this way, there are countless “kings” in this democratic state every year.
